Nutsedge (also called nutgrass, sedge grass, or water grass) is a very stubborn, fast-growing, grassy weed that grows from a nut in the ground. It’s a water grass, so in rainy periods or in areas that frequently have standing water, it becomes more prevalent. What looks so bad about nutsedge is that it grows very quickly—you mow your lawn and two days later, you have nutsedge sticking up higher than your lawn. There are several different varieties of nutsedge—yellow, purple, and annual, although all look similar.
Nutsedge can recur year after year, dependent on the amount of rainfall. The nut in the ground never really goes away. If you pull it, it looks like you’ve pulled up the nut, but you haven’t really. Nutsedge spreads by underground stems and by a cluster of nutlets on the bottom of the root system. We control it with a post-emergent.
If you have a nutsedge problem, we will recommend our grassy weed applications for your first year on our service. No one wants to pay for extra applications, but for the first year, it will be worth it! Our main objective is to get the weeds out, and we know that you want the quickest results possible. Nutsedge requires repeated applications to accomplish this, so you will have several applications back-to-back, possibly just a week apart. If this is hard on your budget, please feel free to take an additional 30 days to pay, or contact our office to make arrangements.
