Chinch bugs can severely damage lawns in both the nymph stage and adult stage. They have hollow beaks with which they pierce the grass, injecting saliva and sucking out the sap. This feeding retards the plant’s metabolic processes and prevents normal growth. Unfortunately, the nymphs are as small as a flea, so one rarely sees them.
Damage occurs most frequently in hot, dry weather, usually in mid to late summer. Since it’s already hot and dry, most people think the damage is a lack of water, but it’s actually the result of the chinch bugs sucking all the juice out of your grass! If you have a brown area that does not respond to watering and seems to be getting bigger, give us a call and we’ll have a technician check for chinch bugs and apply an insecticide if necessary.
