Lawn Overseeding

What Does Overseeding Mean?

With a multitude of DIY products on the market for lawn weed control, it can be a gIf your lawn is experiencing browning or thinning spots, the solution is called overseeding. Overseeding is when you apply grass seed directly into existing turf, without tearing up the turf or soil. The lawn care experts at Fairway Lawns perform fall overseeding in the Tulsa, Fort Smith, Springdale, Memphis, Huntsville, and Greenville areas.

When to Overseed Lawn

All cool season grass should be overseeded each fall to keep it lush. Unlike warm season grass, fescue, rye, and bluegrass don’t spread. Seeding it each fall post-aeration will ensure that your shade grass stays nice and thick. Grass seed is better able to retain moisture and seedlings thrive without the extreme heat that occurs in the summer months.

Many areas that we service are in a transitional zone, which means that it’s too hot for these shade grass types. It will look nice in the spring, but when the heat of summer hits it, some of it will die back, which makes fall overseeding that much more important!

If you have shade grass in your lawn and don’t want to do the fall overseeding yourself, please call our lawn care technicians for a free estimate. We usually overseed in mid-to-late September.

What Happens When You Overseed Your Lawn?

It’s possible that a previous homeowner planted a type of grass that isn’t suitable for your area, or that the grass isn’t as impervious to disease and pests as it could be. Overseeding adds new grass seed over the grass that is already present.

Overseeding helps:

  • Fill in bare spots
  • Create thicker turf
  • Introduce enhanced varieties of grass to your lawn
  • Improve your lawn’s health
  • Boost your yard’s appearance by adding more color
  • Strengthen your lawn’s ability to fight off future damage from insects and diseases
